Asking For It

She was not asking for it by leaving her friends after the nightclub.

She was not asking for it by drinking too much.

She was not asking for it by wearing an outfit that revealed her skin.

She was not asking for it by flirting with him and then changing her mind.

She was not asking for it by rejecting him.

She was not asking for it by walking home alone.

*

She was not asking for it.

*

I was not asking for it.

*

We have never asked for this.

*

Asking for it is not an attitude.

It is not an outfit. A look.

It is not walking alone at night, or walking alone at any time.

It is not a flick of your hair or an expression on your face.

It is not the sexualisation of a gender excused by the primitive needs of another.

*

Because when a girl actually wants to ask for something,

She’ll just say it.
